Starting January 1, 2025, soldiers and their families will have access to a remarkable new benefit: emergency travel grants from the Army Emergency Relief (AER). These grants, designed to alleviate financial burdens during family emergencies, provide up to $2,000 for domestic travel and $4,000 for international trips.
This significant shift in policy replaces the previous 50% zero-interest loan and 50% grant model, ensuring that soldiers can focus on what truly matters during crises without worrying about financial strain.
As a military community, we know the challenges service members face, particularly those serving overseas. The cost of unexpected travel—whether for a family funeral or a loved one's critical illness—can quickly become overwhelming, especially for junior enlisted soldiers earning around $30,000 annually.
"I know firsthand the difficulties of losing a parent while serving away from home," said Michael Grinston, CEO of Army Emergency Relief and former Sergeant Major of the Army. "This change ensures soldiers can attend funerals or visit hospitals with immediate family without the financial burden."
AER’s updated travel assistance is part of a larger effort to support soldiers and their families during crises. In 2024, AER provided $4.6 million in travel assistance and ramped up financial aid for hurricane relief and domestic violence victims.
While these expanded programs demonstrate AER’s commitment, they also come with challenges. The nonprofit anticipates a $1.7 million funding shortfall next year, underscoring the importance of community donations.
This new grant program and other AER initiatives rely on generous contributions from individuals and organizations. To support soldiers and their families, consider donating to Army Emergency Relief. Your contribution can make a life-changing difference for those who sacrifice so much for our country.
